Hygroreceptions is a sonic/sculptural interactive installation taking place in two places at the same time. The term Hygroreception is the ability to detect changes in the moisture and humidity content of an environment. It is a sense that is not present in humans.
Everything in this work relates to water and liquidity but nothing is actually wet.
It navigates and explores the space in between the synchronicity of a moment, the distance of physical space and the notion of proximity and connection. The work functions within the margins of antennas, receptors, transducers and conductors. It is separated but shared, while fundamentally in connection.
New Haven held the Sculptural part. Large spills, soft free flows of iron and copper sourced from bathtubs, sinks and radiators and recycled cables lifted and held upright attached to the walls, holding the space for the cacti instruments. Oscillating sculptures with string glove holders, microphones and cacti, that are meant to be played by anyone and everyone who wishes to interact. Instruments with no technique required.
The performance took place simultaneously in New Haven and Athens. The sound of the played cacti in New Haven were broadcasted in Athens through contact speakers and microphones inside a washing machine and a clothing drying rack by Paul Koutselos. The result of the sonic manipulation was broadcasted back to New Haven through a screen in a separated space of the gallery through headphones.
